Introduction

Álvaro Siza was born in 1933, the same year the Bauhaus closed its doors. He is perhaps the last living modernist or, at the very least, the most significant voice to carry the unfinished modernist project into the 21st century. This Museum Dialogue celebrates both the opening of SIZA – UNSEEN & UNKNOWN, at the Tchoban Foundation. Museum for Architectural Drawing, and the centennial of the Bauhaus with a conversation between Álvaro Siza and the director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Claudia Perren. Together with Sergei Tchoban and moderated by Matthias Sauerbruch, the protagonists reflected on the many points of contact between Siza and the Bauhaus legacy, less than a year after Siza inaugurated his Chinese Design Museum, in Hangzhou, built around a permanent Bauhaus collection.
