Bucerius Summer School 2019
The 2019 Bucerius Summer School workshop examines questions regarding ‘Transit Spaces’ on spatial, social, artistic and political levels through input presentations and participatory workshops.

Task
Transit Spaces have become increasingly important for investigating the interaction and interconnectedness between places, institutions, actors and concepts across (multiple forms of) borders. The term transit is embedded within all aspects of human life, especially in the present-day era of rapid mobility, globalisation and digitalisation. The characteristics and consequences of transit spaces and places in-between were examined, while questionsing the effects on people, their identity, economical and societal stability and international politics.
The BSS event had two parts
1. Three input presentations with Q+A
2. A workshop session where the participants were divided into three groups. Each group examined a focus theme within the topic of ‘Transit Spaces’. The participants were then provided with a toolbox and the help of a workshop coach and co-coach.
Workshop Themes
1. Transit Spaces in Art: This topic dealt with artistic concepts related to spatial perception and spaces of communication.

3. Transit Spaces in Architecture: In this workshop spatial aspects of passing through, encounter and permanence were examined. Can today’s transit spaces influence cultural identity and perspective?
