The Housing Project – Berlin Lab is an international workshop that brings together students from nine universities across eight countries to explore the rich and varied architectural legacy of Berlin’s housing developments. Spanning from the Gründerzeit era and the Modern Movement to post-WWII reconstruction, the International Building Exhibitions (IBA 1957/1984), post-Wall regeneration and contemporary experimental approaches, Berlin serves as a dynamic case study for housing evolution.
Task
Participants take on the role of urban investigators, identifying exemplary housing projects and analysing their architectural typologies, urban concepts and potential for future development. Working in interdisciplinary teams, students will produce in-depth project profiles that connect historical context with forward-looking strategies. Selected case studies will highlight best practices in architecture and sustainable urban development, culminating in a final review and public exhibition.
