Task

In response to Berlin’s announcement of transforming Galeries Lafayette into a  new central library for the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek (ZLB), students from Iowa State University have unveiled a visionary project aimed at revitalising the iconic space. The proposal of the students, not only look into hosting a library, but also turning the building into residential units.

Galeries Lafayette, designed by Jean Nouvel, is known for its striking glass facade and innovative architectural features.  The building, with its spacious layout spanning 35,000 square meters, is strategically positioned near Berlin’s bustling Friedrichstraße station and within walking distance of the historic Friedrichstraße Bahnhof.

The project aims not only to address the pressing need for updated library facilities but also to reinvigorate the cultural and educational landscape of Berlin. Students from Iowa State University, leveraging advanced environmental simulation software, have proposed transforming Nouvel’s structure into a net-zero emission facility. This entails enhancing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring the building meets contemporary climate standards—a crucial aspect given Berlin’s commitment to sustainable urban development.

What if..
