Introduction

Museum Revisited is the prelude to the ANCB’s long-term project Museum of the 21st Century – Content – Form – Impact, which will examine the relationship and interaction between museums, urban space, culture, economy and society in various formats. This first symposium in cooperation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation with its director Dr Claudia Perren will address perspectives on the significance of the museum against the backdrop of international, multidisciplinary and digital developments and discuss them on an international level via the three focal points Museum as Place, Museum as Medium and Museum as Brand, thus providing a first ‘entry’ into this complex thematic field.

Museum Revisited will deal with the museum in the context of curatorial concepts, the handling and accessibility of cultural achievements and collections, and the investigation of digital networking and global cooperation. The starting point is the invited guests’ individual and current approaches to questioning conventions in the context of their work. How is content communicated and what curatorial strategies are employed? What new possibilities and technologies for cooperation between institutions exist or are being developed? How are certain, time-limited forms of exhibitions to be archived? In addition, the question of the connection between education and entertainment (edu-tainment) will be discussed against the background of scientific aspirations and the orientation towards a mass audience. Is the museum today also an economic and political instrument that bridges the gap between local tasks and the international significance of collections and exhibitions? Does the museum function as a social and urban catalyst?

From the urbanist-social perspective of the ANCB, the role of the museum for the city, public space and citizens will also be examined again and again with the questions posed.
