Science. Fiction. International Politics: Visible and Invisible Borders

Bucerius Summer School 2018

The Bucerius Summer School workshop examines questions regarding visible and invisible borders on spatial, social, cultural, technical and economical levels through the fictional narratives and places of science fiction films.

Task

The BSS event had two parts
1. Three input presentations with Q&A
2. A workshop session where the participants were divided into three groups. Each group examined a focus theme exemplified by a science fiction film. The participants were provided with a toolbox and the help of the visualizer/graphic facilitator. One moderator, one of the morning’s speakers and one visualizer led each workshop.

Workshop Themes
1. Social Control: This topic dealt with control through types of “social credit” systems and the subsequent impact on social and spatial levels.

2. Racism and Post-Colonialism: This workshop focused on spatial and political discrimination and segregation.

3. City/Periphery: In this workshop we examined borders between the urban and rural with regard to aspects of supply, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, economy, culture, connectivity and digitalization.
