Task

As part of an ongoing series of international design experiences, students will participate in a workshop centered on the concept of “Organic Design.” Collaborating across four European universities spanning Germany, Italy, Greece, France, and the Netherlands, the workshop will be hosted by Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory.

This year’s focus will explore the interconnectedness of architecture, urban environments, and the concept of “groundscaping”. Drawing inspiration from elemental principles—earth, fire, water, and air—rooted in ancient Greek philosophy, participants will delve into the modification of the earth’s crust for human construction.

The chosen site in Berlin, the “Freie Universität Berlin” offers a tangible example of this concept, showcasing the visionary work of architects G. Candilis, A. Josic, and S. Woods. Here, the architects conceived a groundbreaking “groundscraper” model, blurring the lines between building and landscape to create an ideal community space. As construction began in 1967, the building’s form remains fragmented due to incomplete realization.

The workshop will critically examine the original project scheme, exploring opportunities to enhance and extend its vision with new architectural formations aligned with the principles of freedom and knowledge. Embracing the ancient notion of the building as a microcosm of the city, participants will reimagine the site as a harmonious oasis for creativity and learning.

What if..

we could reimagine design as the art of "groundscaping" a microcosmos?
