Introduction

The event series überFLUSS (RIVERtalks) is dedicated to river baths and river swimming in the broader context of current urban development worldwide. In conversation with urban professionals, activists, scientists, politicians and members of city administrations, Flussbad Berlin will exchange knowledge and experiences and discuss the potential of a river bath for Berlin.

FLUSSBAD BERLIN

Flussbad Berlin seeks to transform the banks of the Spree River and Spree Canal into a new social meeting place. The goal is to focus on the river and turn it into a fresh lifeline at the centre of Berlin – accessible to all and open to new experiences. Three sections are foreseen within the project area, which extends over a length of roughly 1.8 kilometres from the Fischerinsel to the Bode-Museum: a re-naturalised area, a natural plant filter area adjacent to the Federal Foreign Office where the Spree water would be cleaned and, finally, a 840 meter section between Schlossplatz and Bode-Museum where visitors would have access to a fresh river for the first time. In order to promote the idea, a not-for-profit association was founded in 2012. Since last year, Flussbad Berlin is supported by the German government and the state government of Berlin as part of the National Urban Development Projects programme.
