Introduction
Berlin International’s Faculty of Architecture and Design devoted this winter semester’s interdisciplinary project to looking into Knowledge Spaces. The project studio culminated in a five-day intensive workshop at the Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory, during which the students worked on presenting their proposals in a multi-format installation.
The exhibition examines the interplay between physical spaces and the evolving identity of universities. The six exhibited projects seek to explore the multifaceted changes in the physical layout, design and utilisation of spaces within university environments by re-using the former Textile Dyeing Factory from 1925 in Meyerbeerstr, Weißensee. They investigate how these alterations intersect with the redefinition of institutional identity and its role in shaping the educational experience.

Background
Higher education has undergone a whole generation’s worth of transformations in recent years. While the pandemic changed what students expect from universities, technological advancements have gained momentum. Accessible generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools take hold of everyday life and redefine how knowledge, art and practical skills are accessed and (re)produced. Since knowledge is to be found everywhere, educational institutions no longer have privileged access to it and must distinguish themselves anew. The importance of the campus as a space to interact becomes crucial.
Founded in 2014, Berlin International is the youngest and only school of architecture and design in Berlin running entirely in English. The programmes thrive on critical reflection, close supervision, and practical learning. For this project, 5th semester students from the Bachelor programmes in Architecture, Graphic Design and Visual Communication as well as Interior Architecture/Interior Design worked in interdisciplinary teams. The projects were supervised by Prof. Karsten Huneck, Prof. Katharina Lemke and Heike Brandt and supported by Prof. Yüksel Pögün-Zander, PhD.
