What’s Cooking?

#7 Whose Idea Is It? Thinking Through Making: Aileen Iverson with Prof. Ralf Pasel

Whose idea is it, really? When we cook, build, compose or design, how much of what emerges comes from our own intentions — and how much from the materials, tools and conditions we work with?

Introduction

Architect and researcher Aileen Iverson joins Professor Ralf Pasel to explore how making can shape not only what we create, but also what we think, discover and come to know.

Dr. Aileen Iverson is a Berlin-based architect, researcher and educator and founder of air-architecture. Her work explores the intersection of architectural design, computational intelligence and spatiomateriality. Through hybrid analogue-digital methodologies, she connects computational design processes directly with physical, environmental and human conditions, investigating how situated, responsive computational systems can contribute to new forms of design intelligence and knowledge production, with growing applications in regenerative architectural design.

Prof. Ralf Pasel is an architect and founding partner of Pasel-K architects in Berlin and pasel.künzel architects in Rotterdam. Since 2012, he has headed the Chair of Architectural Design and Construction Technologies (CODE) at TU Berlin. His internationally recognised practice and research explore the intersection of architectural design, construction and knowledge production, with a particular focus on experimental housing, Design-Build and Design-Driven Research. He is also a co-founder of TU Berlin’s Practice-based Research Programme (PEP).

Discussion and get-together

About What’s Cooking

What’s Cooking? brings together conversations and fresh perspectives from beyond the architectural status quo in an informal setting. The series explores space, design and new ways of thinking about cities.

The format is conceived as a kitchen-style conversation — experimental, convivial and shared. What’s Cooking? brings together designers, architects, artists and practitioners from diverse professional and social contexts for short inputs, unexpected perspectives and open exchanges. Each event features one protagonist, who invites a guest from another discipline, sparking dialogue across architecture, design, science, culture and politics.
