Introduction

There is a shortage on the housing market in the big cities. Forecasts diagnose that already in 2070 more than 70 % of the population will live in cities. This means an increasing demand for housing. To meet current demand and keep prices stable, new flats are to be built, but associations and politicians are already criticising the insufficient number of planned measures.

In contrast, many office complexes and former industrial buildings stand empty and offer a great resource of unused potential. Demolition or conversion or revitalisation are often pitted against each other in a kind of camp battle. What opportunities are there here for the cities? What residential qualities are feasible and does it even make sense from an economic point of view to convert these buildings?
