UPWARDS!
Vertical Habitat Between Vision and Reality
This theme explores multidimensional approaches for vertical densification.
Concept
UPWARDS! investigates multidimensional approaches for vertical densification.
In view of the rapid growth of urban agglomerations around the world, vertical densification plays a central role in debates about the future of urbanity and architecture, and acts as trigger for urgently needed impulses worldwide. Unusual and new forms of a balanced hyper density offer the opportunity to create liveable places – both in the city centre and in the periphery. Thus, new concepts beyond the standard high-rise are needed to minimise land consumption in urban and rural areas.
The idea of a ‘vertical habitat’ embraces a multidimensional and holistic approach, defi- ning mobility and technology, infrastructure, connectivity and digitalisation, health and social diversity, urban agriculture, climate neutrality and resource conservation as well as housing and working as coordinates and measures. In various formats with interna- tional protagonists from the fields of architecture, planning, research and politics, this theme presents and discusses current research and visionary projects incorporating these diverse aspects of sustainable living spaces for a coherent society.
”What will the city of the future look like? How will people live, work, spend their leisure time together?
Zhang KeZAO/standardarchitecture, Beijing Project: Vertical Habitat, 2018
How will the city be built that protects land and resources and at the same time offers efficient infrastructures?
How can livable neighbourhoods be created in which distances are short and everyday spaces shape identities?
